Which
of the files would you find useful? |
One of the more difficult features of the PhD I had to
contend with were the amounts of tables used to try and simplify some
of the arguments. Nothing wrong with that, except quite a few of the tables
had to be laid out in landscape format (meaning the creation of new document
'sections' in Microsoft Word).
Why this complicates things somewhat is that when you save a file as a
pdf (acrobat) file, it seems to insist on saving separate 'Microsoft Word
'sections' as totally separate documents.
Hence below for instance Chapter 8, turns into parts 8a - 8g. I've therefore
numbered the downloads, so that if you wanted the whole document in chronological
order, you would download 01 - 016. If it's only a single chapter you
want, you will see details in the file name as to which chapter it makes
up in the whole - e.g.03Introduction_Ch1.pdf, is Chapter 1 of the PhD,
and is the introduction to the PhD.
Happy reading. All errors (as they say) are of course....mine

Name of file |
What it's about |
General Comments |
01Contents.pdf |
Basically the cover page, the abstract, and the list of contents |
Might be a useful first place to start if you want to isolate which parts
of the Ph.D you may be interested in |
02Acknowledgements.pdf |
Without whom, you would never be reading this.... |
|
03Introduction_Ch1.pdf |
This is Chapter 1 of the document - the introduction |
This outlines the main argument which the thesis set out to solve - I
think the argument is interesting (and convincing!) |
04LiteratureReview_Ch2.pdf |
This is Chapter 2, the literature review |
If anything, this was a bit long, I think in retrospect, but it may be
of interested if you want to put modern debates on the issues of the role
of language and culture in the context of economic development theory. (It's
actually not as boring as that sounds) |
05EconDevinScotland_Ch3.pdf |
This is Chapter 3, and looks at past economic development in Scotland |
I found this interesting in looking at how actual practice became much
more pragmatic and 'bottom up' as time went on. |
06Methodology_Ch4.pdf |
This is Chapter 4, and outlines the methodology I used |
Most of this is quite standard stuff, probably, although it does looks
at the rationale for using loglinear (logit) models to analyse complex qualitative
multivariate data - probably not that common an approach. |
07SupplySide_Ch5.pdf |
This is Chapter 5 and looks at the 'Supply Side' of the Gaelic arts and
Cultural Sector |
This tries to outline the 'main players' in the feild of Gaelic arts and
culture, and gives you details of how much money is generated in the economy
by the activity of those involved in producing Gaelic artistic and cultural
goods and services. |

08aDemand_Ch6.pdf |
This is Chapter 6 and examines the demand for Gaelic language arts and
culture |
This, I think is quite fascinating. It is certainly 'new knowledge'. It
shows for the first time, the attitude of the respondents, whether Gaelic
speaking or not, towards the provisions of services, within the 'Gaelic
Economy'. Interestingly, it also looks at trends behind demand. (I could
go on all night...but won't) |
08bDemand_Ch6.pdf |
This is the next part of Chapter 6 and continues the argument |
As above - saved as a separate sector due to the technicalities of Adobe
Acrobat |

|
09Conclusions_Ch7.pdf |
This is Chapter 7 and is entitled 'Conclusions', although you really also
need Chapter 8 the Postscript which brings things up to date |
This tries to synthesis everything together. Probably worth reading with
the Introduction and Chapter 8 for the most succinct rendering of what the
PhD was about |
010Postscript_Ch8.pdf |
This is Chapter 8 and updates the findings, to 2003 |
Most of my 'hard' data was collected 1995 - 97. This tries to comment
on events since then |
011Bibliography.pdf |
As suggested, this is the bibliography |
This could be of use for those wishing to see what's available in the
area |
012Appendix1.pdf |
This is the list of organisations consulted and surveyed |
|
013Appendix2.pdf |
This is the large scale consumer survey, which went to 8000 people (with
a response from 2028) |
This was designed by a commercial firm and optically scanned |
014Appendix3.pdf |
This is a survey used to gauge demand for Gaelic goods and services by
businesses |
This was designed in Quark Express |
015Appendix4.pdf |
This is the survey used for individual practitioners of Gaelic ('supply
side') |
This was designed in Quark Express |
016Appendix5.pdf |
This is the survey used for the organisations which supply Gaelic goods
and services |
This was designed in Quark Express |
